UNDERSTANDING
you are not alone
What Is OCD?
OCD is a mental health condition characterized by two related changes in your everyday thought and behavior. The first change is the onset of recurring thoughts, impulses, or images known as obsessions. These obsessions are unwanted and illogical, and trigger serious feelings of distress. You may or may not be aware of their illogical nature. But even if you are aware, they can’t be reasoned with or rationalized away.
Instead, they typically lead to the second major issue associated with OCD: compulsions. A compulsion is an involuntary behavior or pattern of thought that arises as a reaction to a specific obsession. It temporarily lowers or eliminates the distress associated with that obsession. The compulsions you experience may have a clear or obvious connection to a given obsession. However, they may also seem unrelated to it.
Many people who don’t have OCD are affected in some way by obsessions or compulsions. However, they retain their ability to carry out a normal everyday routine. In contrast, if you have OCD, your symptoms are serious enough to interfere with your daily function. To receive an official diagnosis, you must also:
- Lack the ability control your obsessions and compulsions
- Be affected by them for an hour or more each day
- Derive no kind of pleasure from your compulsions, just temporary relief
It’s important to know that people with OCD may also be affected by additional mental health issues. Issues known to sometimes occur alongside the illness include depression and Tourette syndrome. They also include body dysmorphic disorder and conditions classified as anxiety disorders.

Understanding the Signs
What Are the Signs of OCD?
No two people with OCD are affected in exactly the same way. However, certain kinds of obsessions and compulsions are fairly common. The list of the most typical obsessions includes:
- An intense anxiety about maintaining precision or order
- Enduring thoughts or fears related to religion or blasphemy
- Sexual thinking or imagery that causes distress
- An abiding fear of being contaminated by your environment or other people
- Recurring worries of throwing away or losing something you value
- A persistent sense that something has gone undone or uncompleted
- Repeated worries of hurting people or being hurt by them
The most common examples of OCD-related compulsions include:
- Brushing your teeth, bathing, or washing your hands excessively
- A need to keep things in your environment in a precise, specific order
- Ritualized counting or other ritualized behaviors related to numbers
- A repeated need to check the status of things like doors, switches, or locks
People with obsessive-compulsive disorder may also have a constant need for reassurance or the approval of others. In addition, they may try to avoid anything that could set off a cycle of obsession and compulsion. Be aware that not everyone affected by the disorder develops compulsions.
These are just some of the potential effects of OCD. For more information, talk to the specialists at our mental health treatment center in the San Fernando Valley.

How Does OCD Affect Mental Health?
All people with OCD undergo mental health changes that interfere with their daily function in substantial ways. However, not everyone is equally affected. One notable potential difference is the seriousness of your OCD symptoms.
A small minority of people diagnosed with the disorder have relatively mild symptoms. A little over a third of those affected qualify for a moderate OCD diagnosis. But it’s important to note that roughly half of the people who meet the criteria for the disorder are severely impacted.
In some cases, the symptoms of OCD may fade away for a while, only to reoccur later. You may also become progressively better or worse over time. In a worst-case scenario, the effects of the disorder may impact you constantly throughout your day-to-day life.

TREATMENT
How to Treat
How to Treat OCD?
It’s not always possible to fully eliminate the mental health impact of OCD. Nevertheless, the right care plan can help bring the effects of the disorder under control. How does a San Fernando OCD center treat the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder? Today, two forms of care are known to provide a benefit for most people. The first of these options is a form of psychotherapy known as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
CBT has several important goals. First, it helps you understand the impact of OCD on your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The therapy also helps you identify specific instances when the disorder affects your outlook in any of these three areas. In addition, you learn how to develop healthier mental and behavioral habits that can help reduce the intensity of your symptoms.
A form of cognitive-behavioral treatment called exposure response and prevention (ERP) is often used. In the controlled setting of ERP, you are exposed to things that trigger your obsessions or fears. Instead of responding as you typically would, you do your best to avoid reacting. As you build up this ability over time, your symptoms may have less and less impact on you.
Effective OCD treatment in the San Fernando Valley may also include medication. The usual medication of choice is a form of antidepressant known as an SSRI. Multiple kinds of SSRIs show a benefit for at least some people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. It may take time to find the right one for your situation. In addition, it may take time for that medication to work as expected.
The seriousness of your OCD has an impact on your likely treatment options. If your symptoms are mild or moderate, your recovery plan may only include therapy or medication. However, a combination of both treatments is usually recommended for severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. You may also receive both therapy and medication for mild or moderate OCD in certain situations.
